Time calculator for adding and subtracting durations

Enter two durations and choose Add or Subtract. Calculator24 converts both to seconds, performs the operation and returns normalized days, hours, minutes and seconds plus decimal hours and total minutes.

How to add or subtract time

Enter the first and second duration in separate day, hour, minute and second fields. Values greater than 59 are accepted and normalized, so 90 minutes becomes 1 hour 30 minutes.

  1. Enter the first duration.
  2. Choose Add or Subtract.
  3. Enter the second duration.
  4. Read the normalized result and totals.

Convert time to one base unit

Reliable duration arithmetic starts by expressing every part in the same unit. Calculator24 uses seconds, performs one signed operation and then divides the total into larger units.

total seconds = days × 86,400 + hours × 3,600 + minutes × 60 + seconds

How normalization works

The remainder after full days becomes hours; the remainder after full hours becomes minutes; the final remainder is seconds. A negative subtraction keeps one minus sign on the complete normalized duration.

Duration versus clock time

A duration is an amount of elapsed time. A clock reading such as 9:30 PM identifies a time of day. Adding durations does not need a time zone, while adding elapsed time to a real date may cross daylight-saving or calendar boundaries.

Units and exact relationships

NIST lists the second as the SI unit for time interval and accepts minutes, hours and days for use with SI. The fixed relationships used here are 60 seconds per minute, 60 minutes per hour and 24 hours per day.

Frequently asked questions

Can minutes or seconds be greater than 59?

Yes. The result normalizes oversized values automatically.

Can subtraction produce a negative duration?

Yes. The normalized result and totals retain the negative sign.

Does this account for daylight saving time?

No. It calculates abstract durations rather than elapsed time between zoned dates.

How many seconds are in a day?

A fixed 24-hour duration contains 86,400 seconds.

What is the difference from the Time Duration Calculator?

Time Calculator combines two durations; Time Duration converts one duration into normalized totals.

What to keep in mind

This performs duration arithmetic. It does not apply dates, time zones, daylight-saving changes or calendar-month lengths.

Results display up to 8 decimal places; exported numbers preserve calculation precision. This is a calculation summary, not an official certificate.
