How to calculate square footage
Measure the inside length and width of a rectangle in the same unit, then multiply them. Choose the unit before entering values. Use quantity when several rooms or panels have identical dimensions.

Square footage formula
For measurements already in feet, the product is square feet. Inches are divided by 12 before multiplying; yards are multiplied by 3. Metric dimensions are converted with the NIST relationship between meters and feet.

Split an L-shaped or stepped room into nonoverlapping rectangles. Calculate each rectangle and add the results. Do not overlap sections because the shared area would be counted twice.
Openings, permanent cabinets, stairs and partial walls may or may not be deducted depending on the material and installer. Keep the raw measurements so the purchasing assumption can be checked.
Material allowance and cost
Flooring, tile, drywall and other products often need extra material for cuts, breakage, pattern matching and future repairs. The percentage field applies that allowance after multiplying all identical areas.
Cost multiplies allowance-adjusted square feet by the entered unit price. It excludes sales tax, labor, underlayment, trim, freight and products sold only in whole boxes.
Accuracy and unit conversion
Measure at more than one point when walls are not parallel and use a consistent rounding policy. Rounding each small section too early can create a larger purchasing error than rounding the final total.
The calculator preserves conversion precision internally, but a construction estimate is only as accurate as the dimensions, layout and product coverage entered.
