What the sleep calculator does

Bedtime mode works backward from a wake time and an age-group planning target. Duration mode measures an overnight interval and subtracts entered time spent falling asleep or awake.

All clock calculations wrap across midnight. The bedtime result is a time-in-bed suggestion rather than a promise of when sleep begins.

Worked bedtime example

For a 7:00 AM wake time, eight hours of sleep and 20 minutes of latency, counting backward gives 10:40 PM as the time to get into bed.

Recommendations change with age

CDC lists daily ranges from 12–16 hours for infants 4–12 months through 8–10 hours for teens. Adults 18–60 are advised to obtain at least seven hours; older-adult ranges are also shown.

Why there is no 90-minute countdown

Sleep architecture varies between people and across a night. This calculator prioritizes total duration guidance and transparent user-entered latency instead of promising ideal wake moments from fixed 90-minute cycles.

When schedule arithmetic is insufficient

Persistent difficulty sleeping, loud snoring, breathing pauses, excessive daytime sleepiness or safety concerns require professional assessment. A duration total does not measure sleep quality.
