How the protein estimate works

Weight-based protein references multiply kilograms by grams per kilogram. This keeps the assumption visible and makes metric and pound entries equivalent after conversion.

Protein formula

The adult RDA factor in the National Academies references is 0.8 g/kg/day. Life-stage values shown here are 1.1 g/kg for pregnancy and 1.3 g/kg for lactation. A custom choice uses exactly the factor entered.

Worked adult example

A 70 kg adult at 0.8 g/kg calculates to 56 g/day. Multiplying by 4 kcal/g gives 224 kcal; against a 2,200 kcal reference that is about 10.2% of energy.

RDA versus a personal target

An RDA is designed as a nutrient reference for a population group. It does not automatically optimize athletic performance, recovery, appetite, body composition or treatment of illness.

Protein in calorie context

The adult Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range places protein at 10–35% of energy. The result compares the selected grams with those calorie-derived boundaries without treating either boundary as a required intake.

When general arithmetic is insufficient

Protein needs and safe intake can require individualized assessment in kidney disease, metabolic conditions, frailty, pregnancy complications, recovery from illness and intensive training. A qualified clinician or dietitian can integrate those factors.
