How the estimate works
A menstrual cycle runs from the first bleeding day to the first bleeding day of the next period. The engine counts backward 14 days from the predicted next cycle start.
Ovulation and fertile-window formulas
ACOG describes ovulation in an average 28-day cycle as occurring about 14 days before the next period and pregnancy as possible from five days before through one day after ovulation.

For a September 1 start and 28-day cycle, the next start is September 29. Counting back 14 days gives September 15; the displayed interval is September 10–16.
Regular and irregular cycles
An average hides month-to-month variation. Illness, stress, age, postpartum changes and other factors can shift ovulation, so projections become weaker as variability grows.
Other fertility-awareness signs
Fertility-awareness approaches may also use cervical mucus, basal body temperature or multiple signs. A date-only calculator does not observe those changes.
