How to calculate total mileage

Obtain the route distance from a map, trip meter or mileage log. Enter one direction, select round trip when applicable, and use Number of trips for repeated travel.

Mileage and fuel formulas

The calculator converts kilometers to miles for reimbursement while preserving the entered unit for the trip display. Metric fuel economy is liters per 100 kilometers rather than kilometers per liter.

total=one way×(round trip?2:1)×tripsUS gallons=miles÷MPGmetric liters=kilometers×L/100 km÷100

Worked repeated-trip example

A 25-mile trip to a destination and back is 50 miles. Repeating it four times produces 200 logged miles before applying any reimbursement rate.

About the 2026 IRS rate

The editable default reflects the IRS business rate for July 1 through December 31, 2026. Rates and eligible uses change, and the standard mileage method is optional where allowed.

Reimbursement is not fuel cost

A mileage allowance can reflect fixed and variable vehicle costs, while the fuel estimate covers only entered fuel price and consumption. Do not subtract fuel cost to infer a tax deduction without applying the relevant rules.

Records and route limits

Keep dates, destination, business purpose and miles when documentation is required. This local calculator does not geocode addresses, choose a route or account for detours, traffic and personal miles.

Frequently asked questions

Does this find a route between addresses?

No. Enter distance from a trusted map, odometer or mileage record.

How do I calculate a round trip?

Select Round trip and the engine doubles the one-way distance before multiplying trips.

Is the IRS rate always 76 cents?

No. The displayed 76-cent default applies to business use from July through December 2026 and remains editable.

Does reimbursement equal fuel cost?

No. Fuel is only one vehicle cost and is shown separately.

Can I use kilometers?

Yes. Metric mode converts total distance to miles for the entered reimbursement rate.

Does the result prove a tax deduction?

No. Eligibility and records depend on current rules and circumstances.

What to keep in mind

Enter route distance from a trusted map or odometer. A reimbursement rate is not automatic tax eligibility; rules, dates, documentation and employer policy matter.

Results display up to 8 decimal places; exported numbers preserve calculation precision. This is a calculation summary, not an official certificate.
